I print! Signet, brand, and printer’s mark since the age of Gutenberg
Exhibition Gutenberg Museum Mainz 28. November 2025 bis 22. Februar 2026
To mark the 625th anniversary of Gutenberg’s birth, the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz / Germany is dedicating an exhibition to the genre of printer’s marks for the first time. These marks were an effective way to draw attention to the printer’s skills und support their business activities. The aim was to promote and sell both oneself and the printed book. The exhibition is accompanied by an splendid catalogue (in german) published by Deutscher Kunstverlag. Described in detail is the history of printers, artists, and publishers – brought to life through their printer’s marks from a previously unknown museum collection. Exciting case studies from the past and present, such as the development of the logo for Deutscher Kunstverlag complete the study.
