The Geisenheyner antique bookshop in Münster, Germany, has published its new children’s book catalog LIV (i. e. Catalog 98 Winter 2025) online. It is entitled POP-UP SPIEL- AUFSTELL und
THEATERBÜCHER (POP-UP- PLAY- AND THEATER BOOKS) and focuses on the work created by Lothar Meggendorfer on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death in 1925.
In the foreword, Winfried Geysenheiner writes:
With this year’s winter catalog, I would like to commemorate the magnificent picture book artist Lothar Meggendorfer, who died 100 years ago. With his wit and humor, he created movable picture books that are still unsurpassed in their mechanical sophistication today. I hope you enjoy his picture books and the pop-up books that have been created over the last 100 years.
Lothar Meggendorfer enjoys the highest international appreciation for his unique work, whose influence continues to this day. In his native Germany, the anniversary was largely overlooked. The well-known rule that philosophers are not appreciated in their own country seems to apply here. It is therefore all the more gratifying that an antiquarian here is honoring the artist with a catalog. So we would like to take this opportunity to thank Winfried Geisenheyner for this, but even more so for his many years of commitment to children’s books. The catalogs created over the years have been compiled with great expertise and are an important and rich source of information for our work.
The current catalog contains detailed descriptions of 23 works by Lothar Meggendorfer. Another 130 or so lots are devoted to pop-up books and similar works from the last 150 years. We hope you enjoy studying them – as we did.

Im Vorwort schreibt Winfried Geysenheiner:
Mit dem diesjährigen Winterkatalog möchte ich an den vor 100 Jahren verstorbenen, grandiosen Bilderbuchkünstler Lothar Meggendorfer erinnern. Mit seinem Witz und Humor hat er bewegliche Bilderbücher erschaffen, die an mechanischer Raffinesse auch heute noch unübertroffen sind. Ich wünsche Ihnen viel Freude an seinen Bilderbüchern und den Pop-up Büchern, die in den letzten 100 Jahren entstanden sind.
Lothar Meggendorfer genießt international höchste Anerkennung für sein einzigartiges Werk, dessen Geltung bis heute fortwirkt. In seinem Geburtsland Deutschland hat man seinen 100. Todestag im Jahre 1925 dagegen weitgehend übersehen. Es gilt hier wohl die bekannte Regel, daß der Philsoph im eigenen Land nichts gilt. Umso erfreulicher, daß hier ein Antiquar den Künstler mit einem Katalog würdigt.
Wir freuen uns darüber und möchten die Gelegenheit nutzen, Winfried Geisenheyner dafür, mehr aber noch für seinen langjährigen Einsatz für das Kinderbuch zu danken. Die über die Jahre erstellten Kataloge sind mit grosser Sachkunde erstellt, für unsere Arbeit stellen sie eine wichtige und ergiebige Informationsquelle dar.
Im aktuellen Katalog sind 23 Werke aus der Hand von Lothar Meggendorfer ausführlich beschrieben. Weitere etwa 130 Lots sind dem pop-up Buch und vergleichbaren Werken aus den letzten 150 Jahren gewidmet.
