Haufe und Lutz antiquarian bookstore in Karlsruhe, Germany, has posted its latest catalog online, featuring a wide variety of attractive items. Among the children’s and young adult literature offerings is a leporello with the tentative title “Alte Kinderreime” (Old Nursery Rhymes), which lacks any information regarding place of publication, publisher, name or year, but can likely be attributed to the Wiener Werkstätte circle from the early 1920s.
Lot 29: Old Children’s Rhymes. No place, printer, or year (Vienna, Wiener Werkstätte, ca. 1920). 9.5 x 8 cm. Leporello, [18] leaves (including cover, 9.5 x 144 cm). with 15 hand-colored woodcuts and 15 verses with hand-colored decorative frames. Color-illustrated original cover with color-illustrated endpapers and a label (“W. W.”) on the back cover. (Please refer to the detailed description of the lot for further information).

In his bibliography Bunte Welt (2008), Friedrich C. Heller* lists a similar work under entry 450, which -as a work from a private collection- has so far been on display only at the exhibition Wiener Werkstätte und das Künstlerhaus Graz in 1972. Other copies are unknown. It is a magnificent piece, though it does come with a price tag of € 6,000.
