During the Second World War, satirical foldings circulated als leaflets that poked fun at Adolf Hitler. On a sheet of paper, four pigs were shown with the text: Find the fifth pig. If the paper was then folded correctly, Hitler’s face appeared – so it functioned to show him as a kind of “top pig.” Early examples appeared as early as around 1940 in Great Britain and during the war all kinds of variants were also printed by underground printers in territories occupied by German forces.

Beside folding sheets featuring Hitler there were also folds showing Mussolini, and even long before such satirical folding puzzles occasionally existed, specimens of Otto von Bismarck are known, while during the First World War Emperor Wilhelm II was taken to task as the “fifth pig.” And more recently, during the Gulf War, the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein received his own copy.
